A good friend of mine, who has been living in the Philippines for the past few months now, is a part of the tasq research team. His name is Michael. I first met Michael about two years ago while he and I were walking through a park in Manila. I was amazed at how he was able to walk so effortlessly without any assistance. I was amazed at how comfortable he was too. That was the first time I met him.
tasq is a project of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that seeks to create a system of artificial intelligence that can think, reason, and learn in an entirely new way: without the need for a mind. The idea is that if you have a brain, you need a mind too.
The idea is that with tasq’s artificial intelligence, you don’t need a mind at all. All you need to do is put a little bit of code in your head and give it a name, and that intelligence will take over.
The project began in 2009 as part of the Center for the Neural Mind. It was later taken public by UIC, and is now being developed by the Cognitive Systems and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. It was designed to be used not just for education, but also for entertainment. It’s claimed to be the first system designed to learn by itself, without a mind. Its also claimed to be able to learn to play the guitar and write a poem on a napkin.
