It’s an interesting idea and one that I’ve had some good feedback over the years. I see it as a good thing because it makes the job more interesting. It also forces the person to develop a skill set that would be helpful for a variety of different jobs.
The way I see it, it’s not as if the job is necessarily boring. It’s more that it is a way to hone a skill set. And as long as the person is interested in the job, the job is going to be interesting.
I had this conversation with a friend back in my college days. He told me that if a job was going to involve working at a computer, then it would be boring. I told him that if you worked your ass off, then anything was boring.
When it comes to skills, I think there are three categories: Core Skills (those that you should learn and develop whether you’re employed or not), Secondary Skills (something you might need if you don’t want to work at a desk job), and Tertiary Skills (something you need if you’re going to be unemployed for 6 months and then getting a job).
So what are the different job categories? Well, Im sure many of you have heard of the concept of a job ladder. This is the idea that everyone gets a basic job first, and as they work and get more experience, they move up the ladder to more responsibility and a higher salary. Another way to think about it is that you start at the bottom and then you slowly work your way up until youre not just a manager, youre a CEO.
Well, yes, it is essentially a way to promote the idea that youre in charge, and that is the same idea that the company uses when they promote the idea of working for people who are getting a salary and benefits.
