Australian Rules Football can trace its roots to 1858, when Tom Wills was playing a game of “footy” in Melbourne.
It wasn’t until 1877 that it became the first football code played professionally in Australia. In 1898, Victorian Football League (VFL) was established and soon enough, Australian Rules Football had become one of the most popular sports in Australia. In 1990s, AFL Women’s league began with eight teams competing for the national title and by 2008 there were over 100 clubs fielding women’s teams across all levels of play!
